Repair Cafe Returns to Madison Oct. 10

Madison Rotary, Grace Church and Repair Cafe Garden State will host a free Repair Cafe on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Grace Church, 4 Madison Ave. The event invites residents to bring small household items for repair on a first-come, first-served basis.

Volunteer repairers will be available to help with lamps, bicycles, clothing and other fabric items, phones and computers, small appliances, wooden items, watches needing batteries, jewelry, toys and knives that need sharpening, among other items. Guests are encouraged to bring items that can be carried in by one person. Gasoline motors and hazardous materials cannot be accepted, and the final repair intake will begin at 2:30 p.m. Organizers welcome, but do not require, an email in advance identifying an item a resident plans to bring; the notice can help volunteers prepare.

The event is designed to keep usable belongings out of landfills while helping residents learn more about how everyday items work. Repairers will explain their process and the tools involved whenever possible, giving visitors a chance to see how repairs are made and potentially take on similar fixes themselves. The Repair Cafe movement began in Amsterdam in 2009 and has since spread internationally, including through locations across New Jersey. In Madison, the effort also reflects Rotary's environmental-service focus and Grace Church's community outreach.

Organizers said the Oct. 10 gathering follows six previous Repair Cafes in Madison. At the most recent spring event, more than 200 items were brought in and a team of 40 volunteers repaired most of them. Past projects have ranged from lamps and dull knives to teddy bears, bird feeders and other unusual items.

The event will also include a supervised Kids' Take-Apart Table, where young participants can explore the insides of everyday objects and learn to use tools. Volunteers and visitors have come from Madison and neighboring communities, with past volunteer teams ranging from teenagers to people in their 80s. Madison Rotary and its partners are seeking additional volunteers, including experienced repairers and people who can assist with event logistics.
