The first day of school has its own familiar rhythm: backpacks are packed, photos are taken, families gather at the curb and students step through the doors ready to see what a new year will bring. That excitement was on full display as New Providence schools welcomed students back for the 2026-27 school year.

Martina Yakoub of New Providence has been named the 2026 recipient of the J. Marilyn MacQueen Rising Star Award, a national honor from the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics recognizing an outstanding laboratory technologist with fewer than 36 months in the field. She will receive the award at ASHI's 52nd Annual Meeting on Oct. 27 in Montreal.

Our House, Inc. has opened its new Spring Street facility in New Providence, creating an expanded, accessible home base for programs that support adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Madison Rotary, Grace Church and Repair Cafe Garden State will host a free Repair Cafe on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Grace Church, 4 Madison Ave. The event invites residents to bring small household items for repair on a first-come, first-served basis.

October is Rett Syndrome awareness month. Rett syndrome is a very rare disorder that some babies are born with. Girls are affected more but there is a very small percentage of boys that have it also. It affects your brain, muscles, and development because your cells are not able to make the MECP2 gene it needs.
