The annual Scouting for Food collection takes place Saturday, November 21. Beginning the week of November 14, Scouts will distribute yellow door hangers with collection details to New Providence homes.

Residents participating in the doorstep collection should place clearly marked donations in a bag or box outside, visible from the street, by 8 a.m. November 21. Scouts will collect the contributions and deliver them to Faith Lutheran Church for distribution to local families and the Starfish pantry.

Requested donations include canned fruit, vegetables, meat, tuna and soup, along with condiments, pasta sauce, rice, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, oatmeal, tea, coffee and Thanksgiving foods. All items must be nonperishable and unexpired.

Residents can also support the effort through monetary contributions. Checks payable to CSA of New Providence may be mailed to 360 Elkwood Avenue, New Providence, NJ 07974. A donation QR code will also appear on the yellow door hangers.

Scouting for Food began in 1988 as a national Boy Scout initiative to collect nonperishable food and help address hunger in local communities. The New Providence effort continues that tradition by bringing Scouts, families and donors together around a practical way to help neighbors during the holidays.

The Community Service Association provides temporary financial assistance to New Providence residents experiencing hardship. Assistance is confidential, with recipients assured anonymity.

Food and financial contributions help support the collection’s two goals: assisting local families and replenishing pantry supplies during the Thanksgiving season. Organizers welcome contributions of any size.
